Teen Book Club: Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson

tttAbout: A sixteen-year-old governess becomes a spy in this alternative U.S. history where the British control with magic and the colonists rebel by inventing.

It’s 1888,and Verity Newton lands a job in New York as a governess to a wealthy leading family—but she quickly learns that the family has big secrets. Magisters have always ruled the colonies, but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non-magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British rule. (taken from Goodreads)

What the Smith Teen Book Club has to say: Just the right amount of steampunk, intrigue, and romance in this alternative history where the British Empire is represented by magic wielding magistrates, and the American Rebels are steampunk mechanics that wield science in the form of steam and electricity. We are anxious for the next installment, Rebel Magisters. 🙂

For October’s Teen Book Club we discussed Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson, had a Steampunk photobooth, and did Steampunk related crafts! Check out the pictures below, and please join us for the next book club at the Smith Library November 3rd from 6-7pm where we will be discussing Curveball: The Year I Lost My Grip by Jordan Sonnenblick.
